What would you do if all of the critical data on your server was lost? Local backup drives are useful, but in the event of a malicious hack or natural disaster, the data on your local backup drive could be destroyed!

We've got you covered. OLM.net is now offering a remote off-site backup option for all dedicated server customers that use a Linux based operating system. This system will allow you to sleep soundly at night, knowing that your server's data is stored at two separate geographical locations. You simply purchase disk space on the backup server from us, and we will configure your server to perform nightly off-site backups using a custom rsync-based script.

We also configure a portion of your allocated disk space to be used for 7 days of incremental backups. This allows you to restore previous versions of files when they have been deleted or overwritten. You can read more about incremental backups at the bottom of this page.

When it comes time to restore a file, you can either perform the restore using the rsync command on your server, or via FTP. If you are unable to complete the restore on your own, we can assist you via Managed Services.

Understanding Incremental Backups Every night your server's backup script will execute, and will copy each file which has changed to the backup server's "full backup" location. If a previous version of that file exists on the backup server, that previous version will be moved to an incremental backup directory, which is tagged with the current date. By default, our backup script will store 7 days of incremental backup data. It is important to note that incremental backups will require additional backup space. The size of incremental backups vary depending on how often files are changed on your server. It is a good idea to reserve at least 500MB per day of incremental backups that you plan to keep. For example, if your server has 50GB in use, and you plan to store the default 7 days of incremental backups, then you should purchase at least 60GB of backup storage space.
